Guinea Trip 2007 with Photo Gallery

To Mother Africa . . .

I thank you for what you shared with me, opening me to a spirit and a joy that extends beyond time and space. Many thanks to N'Nato Camara and her family for extending your arms, opening your home and sharing your ways with me, especially Papa, Mama, Mamata, Yama, Momodouba & the Ballet Taille, Mada, Mohammed, Michel, and the drummers. You all mean a lot to me and I worry for you.

I would like to extend my deep sorrow to the people of Guinea who have lost family and friends in the struggle to have free choice and a fair chance at a good life. If you are interested to know up-to-date info about Guinea there are some good websites; go to www.allafrica.com and www.bbc.com and click on "Africa."

I feel we all need to be informed and talk to each other, since these struggles are also our struggles, as we are one - wontanada. There are huge political players and multinational firms that have vested interest in the outcome, with greed, power and money as driving forces. I am brainstorming fundraising ideas for a show to raise money for the people suffering; if you have any ideas and are interested to donate, please contact me.

Below are links to some photos I want to share with everyone.

I was blessed to be in Guinea at a good time and got to bring New Years in at Youssouff Koumbassa's; to be there when the Ballet Taille performed for all of Mamady Keita's students; to partake in many dundunbas and sabars (traditional and contemporary drum and dance events), among many adventures. We spent three glorious days on the island of Rhoume dancing and drumming on the beach and in the forest, a place I would love to take many of you. We also saw Kindia and La Voile de la Marie (waterfalls) and some of the beautiful Fouta Djialon Region.

Of course I came home humbled to the vastness of the music and dance, and I realize that though I have 21 years in African music and dancing, I have so much too learn. I can't wait to go back.

-Hamdelalaie - dieu merci
